Throughout my years at XPRIZE, we launched numerous ocean-themed competitions that were all part of an overarching Ocean Initiative. From oil cleanup technology to pH sensors and mapping the ocean floor, the Ocean Initiative was designed to address Ocean issues from every angle: acidification, shipping and trade, fishing, exploration and public safety.
The challenge was to drive participation and advocacy without resorting to the doom and gloom of most Ocean messages. While you can't completely ignore the consequences, you can highlight what the ocean means to people, even if they are not always conscious of it.
